Privacy Policy

Dankbar (“the App”) is a gratitude journaling app developed by Robin Weser (“we”, “us”). The App is designed so your journal stays on your device. We do not run servers for Dankbar journal data and we do not collect, transmit, or sell your journal content.

Summary

  • No accounts. No registration required.
  • No tracking, ads, or analytics.
  • Your journal stays on your device. Entries, photos, and recordings are stored locally.
  • Encrypted storage. Journal text is stored encrypted on your device.
  • On-device AI. Speech-to-text and optional recap summaries run locally (no upload of your journal).
  • Limited network use. Optional speech/text model downloads and in-app purchase checks are the only network activity.

1) What data the App stores on your device

Journal entries
When you create an entry, the App stores your text locally on your device. Journal entries are stored in an encrypted local database.

Photos (optional)
If you attach a photo to an entry, the App copies a processed image onto your device and stores a local path with that entry. Photos are not uploaded by the App.

Audio recordings (optional)
If you use voice input, the App records audio files and stores them locally on your device. Audio recordings are not uploaded or shared by the App.

On-device AI models (optional)
If you choose to download a speech model or a text model, the file is stored locally on your device and used there.

App settings
The App stores your preferences locally (for example notification settings, language, and appearance).

Device backups
Depending on your device settings, your operating system may back up app data (e.g., iCloud / Google backup). This is controlled by your device and account settings, not by Dankbar. Dankbar does not upload your data itself.

2) What data we collect or receive

We do not collect your journal content, photos, audio, or transcriptions. We do not receive those from the App.

Specifically, we do not collect:

  • your name, email address, or contact information (unless you email support)
  • device identifiers for advertising or analytics
  • usage analytics
  • location data
  • journal content
  • photos or audio recordings

The App has no server-side component for your journal. Purchase status is checked through the app store and RevenueCat as described below.

3) Permissions the App may request

The App may request the following permissions to provide core functionality:

  • Microphone (optional): to record audio for voice input.
  • Photo library (optional): to attach a picture you choose to a gratitude entry.
  • Notifications (optional): to schedule local reminders and recap notifications on your device.
  • File access / share sheet (optional): to export or import a backup (password-protected or unencrypted .zip; older .json backups still import).

If you deny optional permissions, the related feature may not work, but the rest of the App will remain usable.

4) On-device speech-to-text (AI)

The App includes an on-device speech-to-text component (Whisper) to transcribe recordings. You can optionally download a speech model to your device for this feature; models are not included in the app install by default. Transcription happens entirely on your device. No audio or transcription text is sent to any external service.

Downloading a model uses the network to fetch the file (hosted on Hugging Face). That download does not include your journal content.

5) On-device text summaries (AI)

The App may include an optional on-device text model to generate summaries of your gratitude journal entries for recaps. You can download this model to your device; it is not included in the app install by default. Summary generation happens entirely on your device. Your journal text is not sent to any external service for this feature.

6) Export and import

You can export a backup and import it again later. New exports are .zip files: a password-protected backup (recommended) or an unencrypted backup that contains your data (and an images folder when you use photos). Older single-file .json or .dkb exports still import. Exports are handled through your device's sharing and file features.

Important notes:

  • Unencrypted exports can be read by anyone who has the file. Use a password-protected export if you share or store a backup.
  • If you share an export file, it may be accessible to whoever you share it with and any apps/services involved in the sharing process.

7) In-app purchases

The App is free to use. A one-time in-app purchase unlocks Dankbar Pro. All purchases are processed by the app store provider (for example Apple App Store). We do not receive your payment details. The store provider may process personal data as described in their own privacy policy.

We use RevenueCat to check and restore Pro entitlements. RevenueCat processes purchase/receipt information needed to unlock Pro. It does not receive your journal entries, photos, or recordings. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.

8) Data retention and deletion

Because your journal stays on your device, you control retention:

  • You can delete individual entries or photos within the App (if supported).
  • You can delete all app data by uninstalling the App or removing its data in your device settings.
  • Export files remain wherever you saved/shared them until you delete them.

9) Third parties

Dankbar does not share your journal data with third parties. The third-party interactions that can occur are:

  • App store distribution and in-app purchases
  • RevenueCat, to validate and restore Pro purchases (not journal content)
  • Hugging Face, only if you download an optional on-device AI model
  • Links you choose to open (website, privacy policy page, “rate the app”)
  • Support email if you contact us (see below)

10) Children's privacy

The App is not designed to collect personal information from anyone, including children. If you contact us by email, you may provide personal information voluntarily (e.g., your email address).

11) Changes to this Privacy Policy

If we change this policy, we will update the "Effective date" and publish the new version at the linked policy location. We encourage you to review it periodically.
