Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-02-02
Dankbar (“the App”) is a gratitude journaling app developed by Robin Weser (“we”, “us”). The App is designed to work fully offline. We do not run servers for Dankbar and we do not collect, transmit, or sell your personal data.
Summary
- No accounts. No registration required.
- No tracking. No analytics, no ads, no third-party SDKs.
- No network calls. The App does not make HTTP requests.
- Your data stays on your device. Entries and recordings are stored locally.
- Encrypted storage. Journal data is stored encrypted on your device.
- On-device AI. Speech-to-text runs locally (no upload).
1) What data the App stores on your device
Journal entries
When you create an entry, the App stores your text locally on your device. Journal entries are stored in an encrypted local database.
Audio recordings (optional)
If you use voice input, the App records audio files and stores them locally on your device. Audio recordings are not uploaded or shared by the App.
App settings
The App stores your preferences locally (for example notification settings).
Device backups
Depending on your device settings, your operating system may back up app data (e.g., iCloud / Google backup). This is controlled by your device and account settings, not by Dankbar. Dankbar does not upload your data itself.
2) What data we collect or receive
We do not collect or receive any personal data from the App.
Specifically, we do not collect:
- your name, email address, or contact information (unless you email support)
- device identifiers
- IP address
- usage analytics
- location data
- journal content
- audio recordings
The App has no server-side component and does not transmit your journal data anywhere.
3) Permissions the App may request
The App may request the following permissions to provide core functionality:
- Microphone (optional): to record audio for voice input.
- Notifications (optional): to schedule local reminders on your device.
- File access / share sheet (optional): to export or import your data as JSON.
If you deny optional permissions, the related feature may not work, but the rest of the App will remain usable.
4) On-device speech-to-text (AI)
The App includes an on-device speech-to-text component (Whisper) to transcribe recordings. Transcription happens entirely on your device. No audio or transcription text is sent to any external service.
5) Export and import (JSON)
You can export your data as a JSON file and import it again later. Exports are handled through your device's sharing and file features.
Important notes:
- Exported files are not encrypted by the App by default unless you store them in an encrypted location yourself.
- If you share an export file, it may be accessible to whoever you share it with and any apps/services involved in the sharing process.
6) In-app purchases (planned)
The App is currently free. In the future, we may offer a one-time in-app purchase to unlock a Pro version with additional offline features. All purchases are processed by the app store provider (for example Apple App Store or Google Play). We do not receive your payment details. The store provider may process personal data as described in their own privacy policy.
7) Data retention and deletion
Because all data stays on your device, you control retention:
- You can delete individual entries or recordings within the App (if supported).
- You can delete all app data by uninstalling the App or removing its data in your device settings.
- Export files remain wherever you saved/shared them until you delete them.
8) Third parties
Dankbar does not share your journal data with third parties because it does not transmit your data off your device. The only third-party interactions are:
- App store distribution and purchases (planned Pro unlock)
- Links you choose to open (website, privacy policy page, “rate the app”)
- Support email if you contact us (see below)
9) Children's privacy
The App is not designed to collect personal information from anyone, including children. If you contact us by email, you may provide personal information voluntarily (e.g., your email address).
10) Changes to this Privacy Policy
If we change this policy, we will update the "Effective date" and publish the new version at the linked policy location. We encourage you to review it periodically.
